The difference is that the new one does not need to see fresh air each few days (as most of the other commercially available CO2 Sensors), so it can be used also in rooms that do not get ventilated too often. Price during the crowdfunding campaign is 70 eur

This device differs from the vAir - CO2 Monitor in a way that it comes by default with the advanced NDIR Sensor and Wifi connectivity. It does not have LEDs or OLED Display options. And thus - is available at a lower price, for those that do not need these features.

There is one Button (with function yet to be defined)
And a status led (that eventually will be configurable to emit different color based on CO2 concentration)

Selecting the CO2 Sensor type:

The device comes with two kinds of CO2 Sensors. The default (cheaper) is an Electro-Chemical sensor, which you can change to an IR based Sensor for 20 eur. The notable differences are:
  • Electro-Chemical - Accuracy is +/- 150ppm @ 1000 ppm (15%). The sensor works best if it turned on all the time, as it may need up to two days until it reaches this accuracy. Before this time it would display ~50% higher ppm level. It is also a bit sensitive to temperature so it should not be exposed to direct sunshine, air conditoner or cold weather. The effect would be that it may display less accurate results in those conditions (but would be fine afterwards)
  • IR-based sensor - Accuracy is +/- 50ppm @ 1000 ppm (15%). It needs just 2 minutes until the IR lamp stabilizes and then the readings are accurate
  • Exposure to fresh-air - Both sensors expect to be exposed to fresh air at least 10 minutes each 3 days. The reason is that the sensor needs to compensate for some drift in the internals so the lowest ppm level each 3 days is assumed to be 400 ppm. If this does not suit your application, there are also more advanced dual-chamber sensors available which do self-calibration. Contact us for a quote on this


WHAT IS V.AIR - CO2 MONITOR


This is an affordable CO2 Monitor that focuses on simple visualization and low price. The main goal is to allow a broader set of people to get a chance to measure their Indoor CO2 Levels and adjust their habits towards breathing healthier and cleaner air

CO2 (CARBON DIOXIDE) AND ITS EFFECT ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR

Carbon Dioxide is only 0.04% (400 parts-per-million (ppm)) of the outside air (compared to ~20% for Oxygen). Humans are very sensitive to CO2 and the standard for safe working environment is 0.5% (5000 ppm) for 8 hours work day. Yet recent studies found out that even at levels ~0.2% (2000 ppm) the brain starts to limit some functions. Those are particularly the ones required in most modern jobs – Decision Making, Innovative Thinking, Proactiveness. A notable side-effect is also head-ache, tiredness and others. Sleeping at increased CO2 levels (>2000 ppm) is also linked to bad sleep and ineffective rest during the night.

WHY IS MEASURING INDOOR CO2 LEVELS IMPORTANT?

The concentration of 2000 ppm is reached within few hours in a closed room. It is not that high that one would start to search for fresh air immediately. But the adverse effects already start playing their role. This is why many companies employ CO2 Monitors either in the rooms so that people can monitor and take action. Or they take ventilation systems with built in CO2 monitoring, that decides whether or not to let fresh air in the room.

WHY THE VAIR – CO2 MONITOR?

While designing the vAir – CO2 Monitor few key aspects were targeted, with the ambition to put an innovative device on the market:
  • Ergonomic Design suitable equally suitable for Offices, Living and/or Bed rooms – The 3D Printed White box has 6 Colorful LEDs that aid in the visual perception of the CO2 level. Their brightness is automatically adjusted to match the ambient light so it works equally well in bright offices as in dark bedrooms. Two USB ports ensure suitable placing arrangement. The optional 0.96” OLED display satisfy the needs for exact numbers
  • Connectivity – With an optional Wifi expansion, data can be pushed to any online service using HTTP or MQTT protocols.
  • Price – While monitoring CO2 can be beneficial it is still a new topic, and the price tag for existing devices on the market is a bit high. A key feature is the multiple optional upgrades offered, so that a multitude of people can find the best device for their needs and pocket.

Why advanced CO2 Sensors?


Most commercially available CO2 Monitors need to see fresh air each few days in order to perform internal calibration. In the majority of use cases this is no problem as a house or office that is unoccupied for 4-5 hours equates it's CO2 with the outside levels. Yet there are use-cases where this cannot be granted or customers simply want more precise measurement, and this is where more advanced a CO2 Monitor are required.

I offer 2 sensors that do not require calibration. This listing is for the CDM 7160, which is a new-generation low-power and affordable sensor. This allows to include also temperature measurement along with CO2, w/o needing some complex heat management. You can select upgrades on the top of the page.

Upgrades

The available upgrades are:

  • Temperature / Humidity - An SI7021 sensor is included to measure Temperature + Humidity
  • Temperature / Humidity / Pressure - A BME 280 sensor in included for this
  • 315/433 Mhz - A RF sender module is included to broadcast sensor readings
  • Dust Sensor - A PM 2005 High-Quality Dust Sensor is included to measure dust levels. (Note that the Dust Sensor also emits some heat, and cannot be combined with the Temperature measuring sensors. More details here

Connectivity

As part of my HA (Home Automation) Line, this device is targeted primarily to scenarios involving Home Automation and Online Monitoring. It can be configured to send the readings in various ways over Wifi:
  • Custom URL - This can point to your HA system or to some Public online Service.
  • MQTT 
  • Predefined Online Services - Pre-defined integration with Thingspeak, IFTTT, Ubidots and Dweet.io
  • Predefined HA Systems - Integration with OpenHAB, Domotica and Domoticz

There is also an optional 433 / 315 Mhz connectivity, where the data is sent over some standard protocol

Cubic CM 1102

I offer 2 sensors that do not require calibration. This listing is for the Cubic CM 1102. This is a mature product with high-precision. Since it emits more heat and is a bit bigger than the CDM 7160, i do not offer upgrades with Dust Sensor and Temperature Sensors.



Upgrades

The available upgrades are:
  • 315/433 Mhz - A RF sender module is included to broadcast sensor readings
  • Temperature / Humidity / Pressure - Measure ambient conditions. In this case the device enclosure is 4 cm wider to accommodate the temperature sensor and add buffer space so that the readings are not affected by the warmth emitted by the CO2 Sensor

Connectivity
